Husband and wife team to speak on MRSA at the Oxford PIBA conference, 8-10 April

The meteoric rise of MRSA in both the UK and some, but not all, EU countries has now reached epidemic and political proportions. Dr Vanya Gant, Consultant Microbiologist and Clinical Director for Infection in a leading NHS Foundation Trust, and his wife, 12KBW’s Susan Rodway QC, will discuss at the Oxford PIBA conference on 9 April both the biology of this organism and the issues and challenges currently facing lawyers involved in such cases. Specifically, several clinical scenarios will be presented and discussed in the light of emerging NHS infection control guidelines. The Government has responded to the rise of MRSA with a series of measures designed to control and eventually eliminate this organism, and its contribution to Healthcare associated infection, which in the case of MRSA may cause permanent damage if not death. Many measures have been proven to limit its spread; and many others have been suggested as being effective. The recent emergence of Government protocols to report such infections and institute robust plans to control it through Clinical Governance mechanisms has led to an emerging framework of minimum standards of infection control performance. Clinical claims relating to hospital acquired MRSA infection may now be examined in the light of such recently enforced infection control regulations. Failure to reach a minimum standard of infection control may in turn lead to successful claims. The Oxford PIBA conference (8 – 10 April) will be chaired by 12KBW’s Frank Burton QC, chairman of PIBA.
