Pupillage
12 KBW offers an award of £45,000 to each pupil made up of a £22,500 grant and £22,500 in guaranteed earnings. £10,000 of the grant may be drawn down during the Bar Vocation Course.
Pupils generally have three or four pupil supervisors throughout the year. They can expect to see a broad range of civil work, in particular in the fields of personal injury, clinical negligence and professional negligence, employment law, and insurance. In the first six months of their pupillage the majority of their time is spent going to court and doing paperwork for their pupil supervisor. However, we also ensure that the pupils are given an opportunity to get to know other members of chambers too. In particular, towards the end of the non-practising first six months, pupils are encouraged to go to court with the more junior members of chambers in order to gain relevant experience before they start taking their own cases.
In the second six months our pupils learn to cope with handling a busy practice from the start, and usually find that they are gaining a significantly higher level of advocacy experience than their peers in other chambers.
In the past those of our pupils who have not been taken on as tenants have usually had little difficulty in finding places in other chambers or with leading solicitors’ firms.
