William Featherby QC, who specialises in fraud, has recently acted for insurers in a claim arising out of a fatal accident. The claimant suffered severe orthopaedic injuries in the accident but went on to make a very good recovery. Unfortunately, he malingered and grossly exaggerated his sequellae. The case involved extensive surveillance evidence. His Honour Judge Bidder QC, sitting as a High Court Judge in London, found that the claimant had repeatedly lied in his witness statement and to experts about his disabilities, and had mounted a thoroughly dishonest claim for continuing losses. He recovered only a fraction of his claim and was penalised in costs.
